The Icelandic and Croatian film industries have made a significant leap toward a sustainable future by earning their first Green Film certification, respectively with the feature film The Mountain and the third season of the documentary TV series “Back to the Land”.
“The Mountain” was one of the selected projects participating in Reykjavik’s Green Film Lab, hosted by Green Film’s partner Icelandic Film Centre, Film in Iceland, Inspired by Iceland and Business Iceland.
Now the feature film becomes Iceland’s First Certified Green Film.
The film The Mountain, written and directed by Ásthildur Kjartansdóttir, was produced according to the Green Film guidelines, marking a new era in ecofriendly production practices and setting a standard for measurable sustainability in the local industry.
Towards Certification of The Mountain: The producers and director of The Mountain, working closely with the cast and crew, developed a comprehensive sustainability plan, implementing an eco-friendlier use of transport and technology and choosing more sustainable suppliers across various stages of production.
“We wanted to reduce the production’s carbon footprint and ensure that we could measure and verify our results locally. We’re proud to say we succeeded. The results aren’t all tangible or visible, but one noticeable difference was on set—where no disposable plastic containers, plates, cups, or utensils were used. This significantly reduced the amount of waste we had to manage at the end of each day, and as bonus kept the set tidier than usual,” said producer Anna Guðbjörg Magnúsdóttir.
Electrician Atli lives with his wife Maria, an avid stargazer, and their nineteen-year-old daughter Anna, a musician, in Hafnarfjörður. Life follows its usual course until a tragic accident turns their lives upside down, forcing them to find a new path forward.
The third season of the popular and multiple award-winning documentary series Dulum zemlje (Back to the land), shown on Croatian Radiotelevision, is the first Croatian audiovisual production with a Green Film certificate.
The producer of the series, Tamara Babun Zovko, says: “Our team had no problems adapting to the details we introduced them with during the filming of the third season of Dulum Zemlje, in order to bring us closer to obtaining this certificate. The production has been focused on sustainability from the onset, seeing as our topic is sustainable agriculture. The whole Dulum Zemlje team shares these values, which is why we plan to implement them in other projects of the Wolfgang & Dolly production company, as well.”
“Back to the Land” is the third season of a documentary TV series about family held farms dealing with different fields of agriculture and food production. As its title says, the documentary promotes people going back to the land, agriculture, sustainable lifestyles and agriculture practices.
