Green Film at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival

January 26, 2024

We are happy to announce that two certified Green Films have been selected for the 74th Berlin International Film Festival which will take place from 15 to 25 February with a rich and prestigious programme.

The Forum section includes the debut documentary “Il cassetto segreto” (The Secret Drawer) by the italian director Costanza Quatriglio. The annual selection of typically around 40 films for the Forum focuses on contemporary international cinema productions and eschews conventional distinctions, such as that between fiction film and documentary.

As Sicilian journalist Giuseppe Quatriglio turns 90, his daughter starts filming him. When he dies, she keeps on filming. Boxes become archival materials, as journeys, women and post-war Europe come to the fore. And in the end, there is a father.
Produced by Indyca, Luce Cinecittà and Rai Cinema, the documentary was shot in Sicily with a sustainable approach and received the Green Film certification.

“Il cassetto segreto” is a an italy-switzerland co-production  with Rough Cat e RSI Radiotelevisione Svizzera with the support of Ministero della Cultura –DGCA, Regione Siciliana – Assessorato Turismo, Sport e Spettacolo, Sicilia Film Commission and Film Commission Torino Piemonte – Piemonte Doc Film Fund.

The Generation 14 plus section hosts ”Quell’estate con Irène” (My summer with Irene)  directed by Carlo Sironi, selected together with other important contemporary films that explore the lives and worlds of children and adolescents. The selection focuses on films that, in their narratives and cinematic languages, take young people seriously. Stories that are told through the eyes of their young protagonists and which make their worlds tangible.

“Quell’estate con Irène” is the second feature directed by awarded director Sironi starring Noee Abita and Camilla Brandeburg.

The path of this project toward sustainability started attending Green Film Lab (an international sustainability programme developed by TorinoFilmLab and Green Film), and led to the film getting the Green Film certification.

Italy, 1997. When Clara and Irène, both 17, meet they are nothing like each other but get on marvellously well. They run away together to a faraway island off the coast of Sicily to live their summer freely, and to hide from a reality they want to forget.

Produced by Kino Produzioni with Rai Cinema in co-production with June Films with the support of Ministero della Cultura –DGCA, CNC Centre national du cinéema et de l’image animée, Sicilia Film Commission.
We wish these productions a great debut and an excellent recognition around the world!
