At the Spazio Regione del Veneto/Veneto Film Commission (Hotel Excelsior), the Trentino Film Commission organised an event titled “The new Green Film. An even more sustainable set.” The focus was the updated Green Film rating system that was brought to life thanks to the international collaborative teamwork of 15 European partners among funds and Film Commissions.
The rating system was born at a regional level and was soon adopted and implemented by numerous regional and national funds all over Europe. This was the spark that ignited the renewal and that made Green Film more efficient and universal.
The new Green Film is the result of an updating process aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the rating system in terms of clarity, accessibility and sustainability. The presentation was held in the presence of an international public and valuable partners such as the Greek Film Center, the Icelandic Film Center and many Italian Film Commissions.
The speakers, moderated by Jacopo Chessa (Veneto Film Commission), were Luca Ferrario (Trentino Film Commission), Linnea Merzagora (Green Film), Serena Alfieri (Vivo Film) and Luciano Vogli (Punto3).
The upgrade process was based on science and managed in full disclosure, beginning with the launch of the public consultation – based on the principles of ISO 14024 – that was participated at the European level. The results of the consultation were then incorporated with data from the comparative LCA analysis Green Film Research Lab conducted in 2022.
It will enter in force on the 1st of September.
The main new features concern:
Completeness: 9 new criteria were introduced, regarding transportation, catering, hair & make-up, CO2 calculations and social sustainability.
Better adaptability: a greater number of criteria now envisages gradual thresholds of compliance so that every effort is awarded (if the criterion is 100% complied with, this results in a higher score. However, if it is 75% complied with, it still results in a score, just lower).
Accessibility: some criteria were reworded for greater clarity and comprehensibility.
Effectiveness: the rating system improves the ability to steer towards good sustainability practices. It rewards actions that lead to a greater reduction in environmental impact with a higher score, while at the same time, it enables a reduction in economic costs.
Social responsibility: optimising a sustainable approach implies, in a broader sense, turning our attention to other forms of sustainability besides environmental sustainability. For this reason, a new section has been added, containing three criteria relating to Social Sustainability. Among these, the ethical values of a production are considered, as well as the psycho-physical-social wellbeing of cast and crew on set.
The highest obtainable score in now 65 (50 in the previous edition) and the minimum score to obtain the certification is 25 (formally 20).
