Our film follows Angelo, Mery, Rosy and Giada, four 11-year-olds who live in Danisinni, an old isolated neighbourhood in Palermo. In the middle of the main square, there is an abandoned kindergarten, a place believed to be haunted, which everyone avoids and uses as a dump. The children explore it and decide to transform one of the abandoned rooms of the building into their secret hideout. As the days go by, the kindergarten becomes cleaner, more decorated, and intimate; it transforms from a simple playground into a safe space where the children can escape the gaze of others, share their fears, and let their imagination run free without feeling judged. Behind their daydreams, we learn more about their lives and their community: Mery’s fear of growing up, Rosy’s need for love and recognition, Angelo’s inability to adapt to the social norms of the neighborhood. But this island of freedom will not last long: after fifteen years of waiting, thanks in part to the perseverance of Fra Mauro Bilella, a street priest who has always lived in Danisinni, the kindergarten will be renovated by the municipality of Palermo to become a kindergarten and a counseling center, a symbolic place to start the redevelopment of the neighborhood. By the end of summer, however, the children will have to leave their hideout.
