GREEN FILM Lab is a research project coordinated by Trentino Film Commission in collaboration with APPA – Agenzia Provinciale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente (Provincial Environmental Protection Agency) of the Autonomous Province of Trento and with the support of the Ministero della Cultura (Italian Ministry of Culture).
1) Scientific study
The research was critical reviewed by ARPAE Emilia-Romagna to ensure the validity of the scientific approach.
Companies and institutions of the film industry today are called upon to make their contribution to support the fight against climate change.
The GFRL study was conceived with the aim of quantifying the environmental benefits in terms of reduction of climate-altering emissions associated with the application of each criterion of the Green Film rating system and the additional economic commitment necessary to meet them. The comparative analysis of GF certified productions versus “business as usual” productions was carried out through the Life Cycle Assessment.
Two key aspects emerged from the study:
– the application of each criterion of the Green Film Rating System reduces environmental impacts in terms of climate-changing emissions;
– most often the application of each criterion of the Green Film Rating System also results in economic savings.
* The research was presented at the 17th Conference of the Italian LCA Network Association in June 2023. To request the full study, please write to info@green.film.
An additional output of the study was the development of a pre-assessment tool to predict a scenario of economic and environmental costs associated with the application of each criterion of the Green Film rating system.
2. Involvement of the stakeholders
The event “GREEN FILMING: towards a common approach | Sharing data, tools and training activities” took place on 19th February 2023 at the European Film Market in Berlin.
More than 120 persons attended the presentation, opened by Charlotte Appelgren (CineRegio) and Luca Ferrario (Green Film) providing an overview of the goals and the evolution of the Green Film Research Lab.

3. Rating system upgrade and development
Documentaries have different production methods than feature films or TV series and a reduced impact on the environment.
There was a need to study special measures and thus provide producers with tools that could finally be right for their needs.
Thanks to the collaboration with Doc/it, Associazione Documentaristi Italiani, and APPA, a rating system dedicated to the production of documentaries has been developed, admitting the certification of international docs co-productions and enabling documentaries to benefit from sustainability-related incentives.
